One of my all time favorite books is Mort by the late Terry Pratchett.
The premise of the book is that Death is looking for an apprentice. And he finds a kid named Mort to take up his cloak and scythe, and finally retire.
The book is action packed and full of witty, humorous passages.

“The average merchant in Ankh-Morpork (one of the cities in Mort) was always working. He couldn’t sleep because he was troubled by the money he wasn’t making.”
When I read this, at 13, I laughed.
At 33, a wave of anxiety washed me.
He doesn’t sleep?
That means he doesn’t stay at home?
What about his wife?
What about his kids?
When does he see them?
Does he intend to do this for the rest of his life?
Will he never catch a break?
Sure we are talking about fictional characters.
But I know a lot of people that simply never catch a break.
Why don’t they?
Because, although they are action takers, they don’t have a system in place. A system that makes sure they can stay at home, with their families, wake up whenever they want and still make money to live with dignity.
You don’t have to be like them.
You don’t have to be like the merchants in Ankh-Morpork.

P.S. Mort’s author, Sir Terry Pratchett was ahead of his time.
